Here are some tips to help you break the habit quicker. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Before you begin, decide what you are going to do when you have a craving. Keep a diary for a week or so and learn what times and situations tempt you to want to have a cigarette. Decide what you are going to do instead of reaching for a cigarette. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ask your doctor for advice if you have other health problems or are worried about gaining weight. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The day you begin immediately get rid of ashtrays, lighters and all cigarettes. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Consider finding yourself a friend, relative or co-worker who wants to quit too and support each other. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If stress is a factor then find an exercise program. Joining a nearby health club will be less expensive than the cigarettes. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your home will smell fresh and clean. You'll spend less time, energy and money cleaning your house. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You will reduce the risk of fire. As a result your homeowner's insurance rates may be reduced. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your food will taste better. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Remind yourself of everything nice that you could be buying for yourself or your home with the money that you are spending on cigarettes. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As a last resort remind yourself of the health benefits. You'll reduce your chances of lung, throat and mouth cancer. Or Do You Use The Weight Gain Excuse?&lt;br /&gt;by: Keith Watson&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I do not smoke, never have, and admit to being one of those 'pain in the butts' (OK, bad pun!) that go on about the foul stench, and anti-social behaviour of smokers, especially in public places.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can imagine my joy when one of my local pubs recently banned smoking. Shortly after the ban had come into force I spotted a guy poised with cigarette in hand, and was about to get huffy and even confrontational. Fortunately I held back and continued my beer - but was puzzled. The cigarette was unlit and yet he was putting it near his mouth, flicking the imaginary ash and generally acting as if he was smoking it. Curious about this I eventually enquired, only to find out this was his own rather unorthodox approach to keeping his hands busy and therefore, as he put it, keeping his weight down.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although everyone knows that smoking is detrimental to health, it's surprising how many smokers cite fear of putting on weight as a reason to not quit smoking.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The simple fact is that it is not quitting smoking that affects your weight, but the change of habit can result in you increasing your food intake.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But there are plenty of ways to ensure this does not happen to you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is no need for a special diet when you stop smoking, but you must use your common sense. If you eat chocolates instead of smoking then you are very likely to gain weight!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Monitor your diet for a fortnight before you stop smoking - write a food diary, noting everything you eat and when. You simply use this to make sure that what you eat post-quitting follows a similar pattern.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In a similar way, note how much exercise you can do as a smoker. When you stop smoking, you can begin to compare how much more exercise you can do with ease. This will inspire you to the possibility of becoming fitter in other ways, and will actually help you through the tough period of giving up the addiction.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Even moderate amounts of exercise can reduce tobacco cravings. A recent study found that women that maintained a rigorous exercise regime coupled with a stop-smoking programme were twice as likely to succeed as those who didn't. Frankly, exercising is incompatible with smoking, and you are also more likely to be mixing with non-smokers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's face it, if you smoke 20 cigarettes daily, you are putting your hand to your mouth at least 200 times a day. When you quit, you need to keep your hands busy. How about peeling fruit for snacks, doing jigsaws or maybe even knitting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Keep visualising yourself as a fit non-smoker, especially when your motivation starts to flag. You can always get help with this through the use of hypnotherapy. As in so many behavioural issues, it is simply a matter of re-programming our mind. Although this site is devoted to helping people stop smoking, it may have some indirect self improvement thoughts and information that can help you in many ways besides not smoking. For example the article below can definately help someone take action in stop smoking but doesn't mention smoking at all. )&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Action NOT Reaction by: John Giagkiozis&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Do you feel you are in charge of your life do you really believe that you control your destiny? Or you are of those people who feel manipulated all the time, they are doing things and they dont know, why? Do you have the sense that you are a wooden puppet that someone else pulls the strings?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have an answer for you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Psychologists have proven that human decisions are based on emotions, and once an emotional decision is made they use their logical part of the brain to justify that decision. That way everything is “clear” to you, you think you know why you do whatever is you do. Where is my point?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nobody wants to believe that is being deceived or manipulated in any way, so you rationalize your decisions in order to justify your actions. But what would happen if someone knew how you would react on a given situation?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Simple, That person would control you and the worst part is that you wouldnt even be aware of it consciously. And before you think that this is a far fetched idea let me remind you of something or some form of persuasion most children use, the invocation to love. e.g. “mama do you know how much I love you? I saw Jim with that new bicycle; it was wonderful I cant take it out of my mind”. You probably know how the rest of this conversation goes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If a little child can find ways to convince its parents to do what it wants them to do, imagine what an educated and well informed adult can do.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most persuasion techniques appeal on your emotional side, why? Because you dont know how to control your feelings without repressing them, actually repressing your feelings is even worse.&lt;br /&gt;“Ok John I see that, but what can I do?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You have made your first step by reading this article, cause now you have more information on how things are in your head. There is a funny thing but when someone else tells us something obvious we shift our focus and make all the connections in a sec.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also there is one other thing you should do. Whenever you make a decision wait 20sec and try to focus on the counting not on the decision. You will realize that you see things differently know, more concise and clear.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Do you know what I do after the 20 second period? I mentally take the decision and run a imaginary “film” in my mind, of how things would be different in the future if I took that decision, in any possible way that I can imagine.
